The writing and acting was great but the marketing NBC did for this was terrible. It's like they wanted to attract the religious viewership but attract casual viewers as well. But alienated and lost both. And then they just stopped advertising it after 4 episodes. It's like they just wanted it to fail right away. It's a shame really they had and interesting take of a modernized retelling of the bible story david vs. Goliath. It had some religious moments but it didn't get preachy to the audience or try to push an agenda. I think this could've had a better shot in the streaming platform and not the cable route. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Show You'll Never Hear About *by K***S on Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2009* The fact that I found this show just two weeks before the finale aired shows just how screwed up NBC's marketing strategy is. I never would've imagined that a TV network would write and produce a series on a Biblical character and NOT market it to a religious audience. NBC, you dropped the ball, plain and simple.That said, I have now watched the entire series (thank you HULU), and I was literally blown away by it. The writing and storylines for this series were absolutely incredible (mainly due to the unique events and accounts of King David's life). The show doesn't follow the Biblical account strictly, but it does follow the chronology of events fairly well. Several characters were changed for a better over all effect on the story(Silas = Saul, Michelle = Michal, etc...), but even as an ardent Baptist, I found the changes interesting, and they suited the show very well. The only change that I have any issue with is that they changed Jack(Johnathan) into a homosexual. It just wasn't necessary. The writing for the show was also excellent, combining modern interpersonal dialogue with Shakespearean speeches that gave a lot of 'weight' to the the events of the series.Now, on to the special effects and sets. Both were top notch, and NBC clearly had a TON of capitol invested in the show. As with the writing, the sets added a lot of 'weight' to the events of the series. You really end up thinking 'Wow! This is what a modern day monarchical capital would look like.'Finally, the actors. Again, NBC scored a slam dunk in this category. Each actor in the series does and incredible job (Silas in particular), and they really make you feel an attachment to the characters that you just don't get from reading the account of I Samuel.You would think that with all this series had going for it, it would succeed. Unfortunately, NBC never really got behind the series and they certainly didn't market it to the right crowd. As an overtly religious individual, I thoroughly enjoyed 'Kings' and I would like to see more series like it in the near future (not likely though).
