Although a child could use this set independently without any other magnet tiles, I think this set is more enjoyable if the child has other magnet tiles. We use squares and window tiles from other sets when building our train--particularly the locomotive. The best part of this set is the very sturdy train car bases The wheels move freely, and they appear to be very durable. They have so much fun playing with them. I love to play with them too and they are easy to clean up. We had 3 of the 4 cars connectors break. I contacted customer service via email. I found out that these were an old version and they were sending out replacement of new design right away and they replacing all 4.
