Review: Perfect for quick access and secure storage. - I spent a lot of time researching to find what I wanted which was a way to secure my handgun at home, making it safe around the grandkids, yet easily and quickly accessible in an emergency. This GunVault SV500 SpeedVault is the ticket! I mounted it securely next to my bed in a location I can easily reach without getting out of bed, yet is hidden from view when someone is looking in the room. The wood screws they supplied in the package are pretty short so I replaced them with longer and deeper threaded ones that provided a more secure mount. The unit is very stable and secure and once mounted it works perfectly. It opens within a second of the code being entered and the gun is presented in such a way the person has immediate access to bring it into play. You can mute the beeps so when you enter the code it is silent. It is very easy to set the code and change it, but the unit has to be open to do so. The combinations you can use as a code are nearly endless. There is even a tamper indicator built into the key pad so you can tell if one of the kids has been messing with it. You get two keys with it as well. The small led light inside the vault gently illuminates the weapon for about 5 seconds when the vault opens. Yes, you can hear the vault open as the drawer release mechanism releases and the drawer comes to rest on its footing, but if you really need it, who cares? If you have it close to your bedside, open it when you go to bed and close it when you get ready to get out of bed in the morning. This is not a "Safe", meaning it won't protect your gun in a house fire and it can be opened by a determined person with a crowbar or sledge hammer. Depending on your method of mounting, if a person has the time, they could pry the vault off the wall and take it away to get into later. If you want a safe, buy a safe, bolt it to your floor or wall and protect your valuables and weapons from fire and theft. If you want a secure, easily accessible place to keep a handgun for emergencies and yet not have to worry about the kids having access to the weapon, this is the unit you want.
Review: I like it - Appears to be a really great way to keep a gun accessible and out of the hands of little kids. I'm under no impression that this will stop a burglar from stealing my firearm (hopefully the concealed location with help with that), but it's certainly sturdy enough to keep my young son from gaining access under normal circumstances. It's better to think of this as a strong deterrent, not something that will stop a determined individual. Depending on the age of your children, their behavior, and your trust in them, this may or may not be right for you. A large flathead screw driver would open this in minutes, if not seconds. The safe I received works exactly as you would expect. Enter a code and the drawer drops down presenting the firearm. I find the safe opens reliably after entering my personalized code. I found it very easy to customize my personalized entry code and to turn off the key tones. I have not attempted to turn on the tamper settings (will stop excepting codes after 20+ failed tries to open it and will notify you if someone has attempted to open the safe), but like the idea that these feature exist. I mounted my safe to the wall in a concealed location, putting two screws into a stud, and using heavy drywall anchors for the other two screws. I did not use the smaller screws that came with the safe, I used significantly longer and thicker screws I already had on hand. The safe feels very securely mounted, and I have no concerns that it would come loose over time. I'm not sure how I'd feel with the much smaller screws provided. My only issue with the safe is that you need to be patient while entering your code. You can't just key in your entry as fast as you want, but need to wait about half a second between keys. That doesn't seem like a big deal, but in the event you need your gun, you may not remember to be a little patient or you might just have a hard time judging your timing. This could slightly delay access to your gun, which could be a big problem. This can be overcome by simply making all the entry keys after the first entry the same (ex. "3, 2, 2, 2" OR "4, 2+4, 2+4, 2+4"). If you enter in a code too quickly you can just keep pushing the same key/keys until it registers all the entries and unlocks the safe. There have been some criticisms regarding the battery dying and the owner being unaware, which is a significant issue that could impact reliable access to your firearm. I bought a lithium 9v for longer life, but plan to change it out every 6 months. I'll test the safe occasionally to make sure the battery is still working (if that battery dies you can still open the safe using the key, but this wouldn't be ideal for quick or reliable access). If the battery doesn't last 6 months I'll be pretty discouraged and report back, but I expect it will last at least that long.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How difficult/easy is it to open in the dark? Does anything on either the buttons or fingerprint panel version light up when touched?**
A: There is a LED that glows green when the finger reader button is pushed. But there is no light. It's all pretty tactile, your finger goes directly on the reader, and stops against the start button. Then swipe down fairly slowly, and BINGO! the safe opens. With a little practice it can be accomplished in the dark

**Q: If I mount this on a wall in a corner, can I secure both the back and side to the wall?**
A: No, it's design to mount on the back, right or left side, but not both. There is only one mounting plate available which is placed along the wall where you want it secured. The gun vault will fit in the brackets of the mounting plate and there are screws which you twist on from inside the vault. What I did was instead of mounting it into the drywall, I got a flat, 1 inch thick board and screwed it into the 2x4 stud behind the drywall, then screwed the mounting plate onto the wooden board to secure it better. Hope this helps.

**Q: How long does the code have to be? Can I make it only two buttons?**
A: The user can use a minimum of three entries, or a maximum of six entries, foraccess code.●For each entry of the access code, the user may choose one, more than oneorALLof the buttons on the keypad in combination I have attached a link to where you can download the manual and look at the specs. Thanks http://assets.academy.com/mgen/35/10237735.pdf

**Q: Does anyone know if Taurus Raging Bull 44mag with 6 1/2" barrel would fit in this?**
A: WWW.gunvault.com shows interior dimensions of 2 & 1/4 in x 5 & 3/4in x 8 & 1/2 inches ...hope that helps...

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Awesome little piece of mind
*by M***K on November 4, 2015*

Quite a few reviews on this speed vault SV500 were negative, and I'm not sure why, it shipped on time, and right out of the box I could feel how sturdy and solid of a unit it is, it didn't feel "cheap" to me at all, it took about 20 minutes to install, and that's with reading instructions too. It mounted perfectly on the side of my night stand right next to my bed, set my combo, disabled the "beep" by pushing the silent button up inside close to where the 9v battery goes, put in my 9mm, (which has a nice fit, not too tight, not too loose) I like where my gun is positioned inside, very easy and quick to obtain, entered my code several times and the door opened every time without fail. Some reviewers stated that the LED inside the door was too bright, yeah, it's a little bright, but my alarm clock on the same nightstand is brighter, actually, you could probably put a piece of tape over the LED or color it with a sharpie if it's too bright for you I suppose. It does make a "click-clunk" sound when the door falls open, but that doesn't bother me because from the time I enter my combo to when I have my gun in my hand takes about 1.5 to 2 seconds, so if that noise does alert a bad guy to my location, i'll be ready long before the threat gets to my, or my kids' upstairs bedrooms. I like the security of being able to get to my gun quicker from my speed vault rather than from... my safe,... inside my closet...on the other side of my room. There are three mounting screws that secure the vault in place, so yeah if someone wanted to, they could pry the vault off of my nightstand with a prybar or screw driver with just a little effort, I guess that would be my only con in this review. All in all, I can't list anything that I don't like about it, I've had mine for about two months now and I'm still happy with it, and the price was reasonable too. Hope this helps.
