The SHAPTON GlassStone 8000 is a premium ultra-fine ceramic water stone designed for rapid cutting and mirror-polished edges. Measuring 8.27” by 2.76”, it features a dense, hard ceramic bonded to a glass backing for durability and flatness retention. Unlike traditional water stones, it requires no soaking and delivers consistent, razor-sharp finishes ideal for fine woodworking and professional tool maintenance.

## Description

Shapton Glass Ceramic Water Stones are the finest manmade ceramic water stones….period! This claim is based largely on two properties - the speed at which the Shapton stones cut and the edge they create. Shapton stones are designed to be harder, faster cutting, and denser than any other ceramic water stone on the market. Because they remove material quickly, the time required to hold a tool angle on the stone is reduced, making free hand sharpening much easier. Equally important to cutting speed is the consistency of the finished edge. The sharpest cutting edge is created by the finite intersection of two highly polished, flat surfaces. The finishing grits (16000 and 30000) of the Shapton stone system leave a polished surface free of the scratches creating a mirror finished, razor sharp edge. Each stone is comprised of a 5mm thick glass backing plate fused to a 5mm thick stone and measures 2-3/4 W x 8-1/4L. We recommend purchasing, and using, the Shapton stone holder. As it provides a secure platform and protects your stone when in use.

But these new glass stones are changing the world of sharpening for woodworkers everywhere! The fine grits such as this one are especially amazing for essentially two reasons: they don't soak up water, so they don't have to be ponded like water stones, and they stay flatter and don't wear as fast as water stones. You may think that a diamond stone also has those qualities, and is less expensive, but I can tell you that diamond stones are simply not as good as these! Coarser diamond stones are great, but at higher grits they really suffer, usually scratching your blade up rather than the swarf polishing like how it does for the Shapton glass stones. Basically, I like to use coarse diamond stones (200 to 1000 grit), which stay flat because they don't wear down, plus you can use them to flatten water stones. At about 4000 grit, diamond stones aren't as good, and I am in favor of plain water stones such as King stones (They go out of flat only just slightly faster than the Shaptons, and they don't cut quite as fast, and they have to be ponded before use... But they are cheaper, easier to flatten, last longer because they are so thick, and you can use both sides of them!) But at 8000 grit, Shapton reigns supreme. It just stays flatter longer, cuts so fast, doesn't scratch, and doesn't have to be ponded. This stone seriously cuts like it's a 4000 grit stone, but still polishes like 8000! The size of these stones is perfect, wide enough for jointer plane blades, and plenty of length. This is a stone worth saving your money for!
