## Questions & Answers

**Q: We would like to plant one of these where we are taking down a big maple tree. Can we put it where the maple was? We live in Oh zone 6.**
A: Here is what would be needed in zone 6 to protect from a harsh winter.

It's not a bad idea to "wrap" your crape myrtle this first winter.
Keep in mind that crape myrtles – like all new trees and shrubs – are at their most winter-vulnerable in the early years while their roots are establishing.
Winter barriers should go the whole way up the plant – not just around the base – in order to protect the branches as well as the root zone.
Burlap is a good material because it "breathes" better than solid coverings. You can also buy commercial tree wraps.
Either way, keep the wrap back a few inches from touching the branches. Hammer three stakes around the crape myrtle and wrap the burlap around those. Some people then stuff the little "burlap tent" with leaves for extra warmth over winter.
Plastic is a bad idea. For starters, the branches don't need light when they're dormant and bare over winter. But more importantly, heat trapped by the plastic on warm days can lead to plant damage, including bark splits and encouraging buds to come out too soon in spring (resulting in late frost damage).
Mulch around the base of the crape myrtle is a good idea. Three inches is fine and keep it back away from the bark by a few inches.
I should mention one thing that sometimes happens with crape myrtles colder growing zones – in cold winters, the top growth dies back even though the roots are alive. New shoots eventually emerge from the roots.
So if you find what looks to be a dead tree next spring, don't dig it. Wait at least until June to see if new shoots emerge. Even when everything's fine, crape myrtles are always one of the last plants to leaf out, usually in May.

Hope that helps.
Clint

A: Add a note or send a message with your order and I will send a red rocket.

**Q: Will these survive in nj when planted in summer?? TY**
A: What part of NJ? Crapes grow best in growing zones 7+. https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Crepe Myrtle trees
*by M***E on May 20, 2025*

These plants came very nice. Very pleased with these

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good rootings arrived in great condition
*by B***N on September 16, 2024*

I ordered 4 Red Rocket & 4 Acoma White crape myrtle and I was shipped all 8 in one big box plus an extra one as a bonus. They arrived promptly and in great shape, not broken or stressed.Right now, they are “cooling their roots” in bright shade, as the instructions advise. I’ll be planting them over the next few days.

### ⭐ minimal quality
*by B***Y on April 10, 2024*

Ordered and received four plants end of February, expected small plants (have previous experience ordering plants). The disappointment was not that the plants were short, it is the fact they were no bigger around than a toothpick, making them very subject to breakage. I have followed all planting directions, have fed the plants, two of four have budding leaves, no sign of life from other two. I have planted crepe myrtles for many years, have six in my yard now and have grown several from shoots. Only reason I ordered was that I was not sure I could find same type. I will be planting plants from my shoots and plant the two that were order in an "incubator" area to nurse them. Cost too high for quality of product.
