It was not clear from the documentation that it was absolute necessary to have an audio cable that is certified to work with a digital signal. When I got the device and tried to hook it up with a standard RCA type audio cable, it didn't work. I had to order a "digital audio" cable and then it worked fine.The "digital audio" cable looks just like the standard RCA-type audio cable. It is had to tell from the descriptions of the cables whether they are 'digital audio' capable or not. What would be better would be if this device came with the required digital audio cable, as some of the others I reviewed did. (BTW, when I added in what I had to pay for a separate digital audio cable, this wasn't as good of a deal as some other packaged deals I shopped.)One last suggestion: If you are like me, I had a box of audio cables and fully planned on using one of those to get the decoder Converter to work. There is nothing on the new cable I ordered to distinguish it from any of those. I put a piece of tape around it with the word "digital" on it in case it later winds up "in the box" after I upgrade the TV and no longer need this device. ### ⭐ Not humming along very well *by J***. on March 19, 2017* This decoder developed a very noticeable and annoying hum after only a brief period of usage. The hum is nearly as loud as the audio. The decoder worked okay when first installed, and there were no changes in the installation placement or configuration from before to after the development of the hum. I checked out all parts of the system, including the placement of the power, input, and output cords, and found the decoder itself, when powered, produced the hum in both the stereo miniplug output to a set of headphones and in the output to the RCA plugs (to my stereo) even when there was no audio input (i.e., when the digital input was unplugged physically the hum remained). The unit was powered by the transformer that came with the decoder. The decoder was purchased six months ago, and so should still be under warranty. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding !! *by B***. on July 17, 2016* Thank you Cyelee ! This is what you need to convert from newwer 4K TV's with a feeble number of sound output options and nothing to connect to RCA red/white analog AV system. This converter handles Cable TV as well as streaming - YouTube, Netflix, Amazon. I connected to Samsung UN50KU630D 4K Tv Optical out. This converter is designed to work with your Digital Optical Out. However I noticed that if you have your TV audio set to TV speakers it also connects to my Sony Receiver. So, I not even sure I need to go thru the menu sound switch to Digital Optical Out. This thing handles whatever you throw at it.I connected with an old red / white AV line. There is an unmarked switch on the side of the converter. If sound does not work on first pass, move switch to other position.
