It acts like a pain killer (great alternative to actual pain killer pills), significantly reducing severe cramps and even making them vanish. It's very convenient as it is a small, portable device that can be put inside a pocket or hooked to your pants, and allows one to walk around comfortably. I used to be unable to move when cramps hit, and had to be curled up in bed with a hot water bottle, waiting 2-3 hours to be able to move around or get food or water. But with this, I just have to wait for just 15-20 minutes for the pain to go down and then I can move around fairly easily as the machine continues to work, which is wonderful!Tens does not heal or cure, it is simply an external pain killer for certain conditions. It works by sending electrical impulses that block the pain signals to your brain. Sounds scary but feels wonderful if used properly!If you are planning to purchase this, please talk to a good physiotherapist (most physiotherapists are quite pathetic/badly trained in India, so be careful to go to the best one you know) to get instructions on how to use it properly - the wrong settings can be very painful! The right setting should feel comfortable, with gentle pulses going into the muscle.Also ask your physiotherapist for the time limit of usage. Should not exceed one hour at a time (On the lowest possible setting). If you need to use it for a longer time, switch it off for a little while before using it again.Impressed with the Johari tens machine, even though it's quite expensive for an Indian product. But it's the quality that matters, so it's worth it - I was about to buy a slightly more expensive imported one but my physiotherapist strongly recommended Johari. Also, I'm a big fan of the self adhesive electrodes provided, I have sensitive skin and was worried I might get a rash while using them, but I had no skin problems at all.Note to the Ladies: Your gynae will probably not even think about a tens machine if you go to them for killer cramps (I also had extensive tests that showed I don't have endometriosis or a serious condition, so after that the gynaes had no help or explanation to give, expecting me to struggle on my own). I did my own research and I went to the physiotherapist on my own after I discovered that women in the west regularly use tens machines for severe period cramps - thank God I did! It has been a wonderful discovery, I only wish I hadn't suffered for so many years before I found this.My gynaes have been quite useless (both weren't even aware that magneisum supplements can help ease menstrual cramps, a German doctor told me and was very surprised that indian docs don't even prescribe this important mineral). My senior gynaecologist is a total dinosaur ( and a grumposaurus with a huge ego when she runs out of solutions - preferring to blame patients when she can't solve their problems); who refuses to keep up to date with latest medical research, and is only interested in money. Her only solution to gynae issues for young women is apparently to just have kids, which is quite silly. I know many women with kids with killer cramps each month even after delivering multiple children! Women who don't want kids deserve to be pain free as well, so don't give up - not every woman who is childless has bad cramps and doctors in this country should learn to figure out *why* rather than dispense useless advice. Imagine my shock when I learnt that for TWENTY YEARS in the US, gynaes have been prescribing tens machines to women for bad cramps as it is so safe!!! And our indian gynaes have no clue?? What do they learn in medical school? Only to do deliveries, or force women to become pregnant so they can do more deliveries??I have now learnt to depend on myself for answers in the gynae department - sad but true. I am no longer scared of the bad cramps when I have this machine, and I have only myself to thank for making the effort to find safe solutions!
