Review: Pretty good, but some quirks and flaws - (EDIT: Initial review around July 2012. Update January 2018 changed from 4 to 5 stars for longevity; more detailed update at end.) I've had this for 7 months now, and overall it's a pretty good coffee maker, for folks like me who aren't super-picky brewing connoisseurs. My boyfriend and I typically brew 6-8 cups at a time, so less than a full pot, but not a small amount. One thing we have noticed, though, is that the more cups you brew, the stronger it brews it (more time with water passing through, I suppose?). So, if you're only brewing 4 cups, you may need to use more grounds than usual to get your desired strength, and the reverse if doing a full 12 cups - use a bit less than usual. Perhaps that's normal for any coffee maker, I haven't owned very many. One problem, and a good chunk of the reason for the 4 stars, is that the automatic shut-off doesn't work reliably. In fact, we've tracked it, and the odds are almost exactly 50/50 that the machine will actually shut itself off after 2 hours. So, 50% of the time, if you don't check, the thing will stay on until you shut it off manually. And if you've left the house or aren't paying attention, you could boil off all the coffee and potentially crack the carafe. We haven't had that happen yet (fingers crossed), but basically what it means is you can never assume it will in fact shut off automatically. We could probably have returned it as defective, and perhaps gotten a replacement where the feature was reliable. It's possible ours is a glitch, and that most of them work fine. Ultimately, we chose to keep it and just be sure we always expect to turn it off manually. Fortunately, the main feature we did want it for, the timer, has worked perfectly so far. Bottom line? If the automatic shut-off is the most important feature to you, you might either consider a different product, or be aware you might have to return for a replacement. Otherwise, it's a great coffeemaker. Update: It's now January 2018, so about 4 1/2 years after my previous review. The auto shut-off continues to be unreliable, but the coffee maker is going strong. For its entire lifetime it has been used at least once a day. For the past two years or so it gets used probably an average of 15 to 17 times a week, so a bit more than twice daily. It still has its quirks, but they aren't any worse than before, and it has kept up with a pretty heavy workload. For a reasonably priced coffee maker without a lot of bells and whistles, I think 5 years of faithful service earns it that 5th star. Unless the auto-shut-off is a dealbreaker for you. ;)
Review: Great Purchase - This is a great little coffee pot. I read the reviews before I purchased it. Many people gave it a low rating because if you don't completely close the lid on top then the coffee pot will not be positioned correctly underneath and yes......it will make a huge mess and coffee will go everywhere! I'm inclined to say that's not the coffee pot's fault. And while it happened once to me, it was my fault. It was such a mess, in fact, coffee grounds everywhere, that I put the coffee maker in the sink and rinsed the whole thing. Yes....the whole thing. I thought hell with it, if it doesn't work after this, I'm only out $20. Water even got in the digital display. It dried out and works just fine and I'm more careful. I mean really....what do you expect for $20. It's an excellent price and I love the auto shut off. It has everything I need and something I didn't expect. I use about half the amount of coffee that I used in the last 3 coffee pots I've had! And the coffee tastes great. Highly recommend. Lastly, make sure you run 2 to 3 full pots of water through the coffee maker before your first use. I think some of these people that said the coffee tasted bad in their reviews perhaps didn't clean it well.

**Q: how do i set the time?**
A: There is an hour and minute button that you just press and it sets whichever part of the time you want to set

**Q: What is the warranty on this item?**
A: B & D web site says "Warranty:2-year Limited". No idea what that means? http://www.blackanddeckerappliances.com/products/coffee-and-tea/coffee-and-tea-makers/12-cup-programmable-coffee-maker-cm1050b.aspx

**Q: do i need to use a filter? or can i just use the filter basket?**
A: You must use a filter. The filter basket simply keeps the 5-12 cup filter in place. Without the paper filter, the carafe would promptly fill with grounds. An alternative would be the reusable, fine wire mesh filter that will fit almost every coffee maker with a basket type filter basket. You simply dump the used grounds and rinse the mesh clean. This type of reusable basket is also made for the cone type of filter holder on other machines. PS: always use the 5-12 cup sized filter in the machine. If you attempt to use the smaller 1-4 cup version, the coffee and grounds will overflow the filter and end up in the carafe.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Good product, but it doesn't turn off reliably and is sold by Walmart.
*by J***R on May 13, 2015*

I originally purchased this item on February 25, 2013, to replace an earlier model that quit working. My wife and I don't drink coffee, but we use this to heat water for tea and instant chocolate. It works fine, and it is a good, fairly inexpensive coffeemaker. My biggest criticism is that it turns itself off automatically after a certain amount of time, and it doesn't do so reliably. I guess the thinking is that you don't want the coffeemaker to continue working if you leave the premises and accidentally leave it on. However, there are two frustrations. First, my wife and I share this device while working from our two separate offices, so we sometimes intend for it to run all morning, and it is disappointing to return for another cup of hot water to find that it has turned itself off. Second, it sometimes doesn't turn itself off, so we can't count on it turning itself off--thus defeating the purpose of the automatic shutoff. We're exposed to both the reality of lukewarm water and the possibility of an electrical fire! And there is nothing about this feature in the manual. Update: Last week, I clumsily dropped the glass carafe onto the counter top, and it broke into a couple dozen pieces. Because Amazon does not sell a replacement carafe, I ordered a new coffeemaker on May 7, 2015. I purchased the original unit from Amazon.com LLC, but Amazon no longer sells this product directly, so I purchased it from a third party, variously listed on this site as STL PRO, Inc. and ONE STOP SHOP. When I received the product in the mail this morning, I was surprised to see that both the shipping box and invoice indicated that it had been shipped by Walmart. I mention this because my wife and I attempt to avoid purchasing products from Walmart because we object to some of its employment practices and social stances.
