For info on how to use 1.5" Bsaader solar filters from Draco Productions ($7.50 + $1.50 S&H), Here are the plans.Making Solar Filters for Tasco 10x25 Binoculars:Materials:2 Kodak 35 mm film canistersDraco Baader 1.5” binocular filter set ($7.50 + $1.50 S&H)[...]Exacto knife (scissors will not work on film canisters).5” wide double stick tape10x25 Tasco binoculars ($13 at WalMart OR Gander Mountain)If you want to use them with the 10x25 binocular (or the 10x25 monocular from Gander Mountain for $10), you can temporarily remove the rubber shield over the front end as shown below, and the film canister will then fit over the bare metal tube.Use the knife to cut out a 1” wide hole in the bottom of eachcanister as show here. The 1.5” Baader solar filter will be placed in front of this hole to allow sunlight into the binoculars.Now using ½” wide double stick tape, place strip around the bottom end of the canister. This is the portion of the canister than will fit on the end of the binocular and hold the solar filter.Use the Exacto knife to cut along the edge of the .5” tape; go all the way around the canister to cut off the end with the hole in it; this part of the canister will exactly cover the metal tube.Place the canister, bottom down, on the center of the 1.5” Baader filter.Fold the edges of the filter up to stick them in place with the sticky tape. Keep the center of film flat.Now place the front rubber shield over the top of the filter and canister to hold and protect the solar filter in place.You are now ready to slip the filters back on the front of your binoculars for safe solar viewing. Of course, remove the filters to observe anything other than the sun.Place the solar filters on the front of each side of the binoculars. You are now ready to safely observe the sun.Any sunspot as large as the Earth will be seen with the 10x binocs on the white disk of the Sun, and you may be able to see brighter patches, called faculae, nearby as well with the 10X binocs. They will be ideal for convenient observing of the solar eclipse visible in the US on August 21, 2017. During totality only, it is safe to observe the Sun directly without Baader filters. The partial eclipse should be observed only with these filters in place!Should these filters become tarnished by fingerprints, or scratched, do not use and order replacements from Draco. It is suggested that the filters be stored safely in a Ziploc bag when they are not being used for safe solar observingI recommend these binoculars and filters to everyone; the price is good, and these binoculars perform surprisingly well in a variety of activities, such as bird watching, camping, hiking, and astronomy at night as well. They feel durable and come with a nice carry case. I looked outside and could see things that were fairly far away with enough detail to know that these are going to be very good when sitting in a theater or arena. Its overcast out but I'm sure at night, these will be fun to play with on clear nights. I'd imagine that at least the moon would be a good viewing target with these. They're pretty light weight, too. I might order a second pair just to keep in my vehicle.Update: I used these yesterday at a theater (which is why I ordered them in the first place) and I must say they were excellent! I could clearly see the actors faces and details of the costumes pretty well. They are light enough to hold up for a long time (unless you have a medical condition that might prevent that). They are much lighter than the older Bushnell pair that I have. I was able to hold these to my eyes for a long time with one hand, only switching occasionally to use the left hand for support. As for astronomy, they provide clear viewing of the moon and you can see Jupiter and Venus as discs and not mere points of light. These are also excellent for bird and wildlife watching. Very good item for the price and they are compact. They come with a decent case and are very effective for the price.In case you do not know much about binoculars (like me before doing some research) the 10x25 refers to the magnification (10x) and the objective, or viewing lenses, diameter (25mm or just under 1"). Be sure you take this into account before making your decision!They are extremely light and compact, making them perfect for hiking trips. However, understand that the objectives on these are on the small size (25mm) so you will not get a very large view, nor are they very effective in low-light situations.
