It can tell a child which object is heavier but not by how much. It can tell a student if the objects are equal in weight. What ever is being measured has to be small enough to fit into the little containers, so beans, rice or very small blocks would work. **Q: I am in need of two replacement buckets for the balance. Are the buckets available seperatly?** A: I have never seen them sold separately **Q: I want to use this in my classroom - 1st graders - any teachers out there who are using it - your thoughts? Thank you!** A: I bought it to use at home with my then first grader.... With this tool students will be able to tell which object/thing is heavier and if they are equal... that's about it. If you have super small objects to use that may allow you to have a deeper discussion about how the weight is changing. I have found that most objects I wanted to use were too large for the containers or immediately changed it from too big on the left to too big on the right. **Q: Is this a clock of scale? the item description indicates it's a clock** A: No, there is no clock in the scale set.
