It protects your bike from scratches and allows the chain to be folded compactly. Review: Heavy, but so much peace of mind - The chain is just thick enough to require heavy duty tools to cut, the links and sleeve make it difficult to hold in place for an angle grinder, and the length allows me to wrap several times or stretch to difficult racks if I need to. The lock itself requires very specialized skills to pick. Not something run-of-the-mill thieves will know what to do with. I actually purchased two of these to daisy chain together for a long 10ft lock to wrap around 6 bikes on my car rack or in my garage. I have so much peace-of-mind knowing they're reasonably safe no matter where I go. It's a really good feeling! It's true tho, that these locks are heavy. Like, surprisingly heavy—Jacob Marley heavy. Not something I want to carry around on my person. The only other complain I have is that the rubber cuffs at the end of the chain sometimes get in the way of locking when I pull the chain to stretch in situations where the lock barely fits. Usually tho, I can grab higher up on the chain and the cuff is fine.

Used this lock everyday for 2 months in LA to secure 2 500$ bikes. Someone stole my bicycle headlight but not my bike! Thing is a beast and you'd be hard pressed to remove it with the great lock core and excessive heft. I'd never leave any bike out on the street overnight but this chain will keep you covered if you have a little common sense.
