I have not been able to try it outside with the dog as I have had to much snow since getting it but, it should work just fine. I liked the price too. It has a good sounding whistle to it, is the perfect size, and is even comfortable to use (except for the pain it causes your ears!). My wife and I purchased a pair of these for our back country hiking adventures. Our intended use is for emergency purposes, to find each other if separated, or as a last resort to signal for help. We have never had to use them in those real situations, and hope never to have to do so. I highly recommend this as a safety/rescue/hiking whistle.
