Here are the step-by-step instructions: 1) Loosen the nut by rotating it anticlockwise with your thumb and index finger. If it's tight, use a little bit of force. 2) Lift or pull the used lead tip from it's groove. 3) Make sure there is no dirt in the groove, install new lead tip carefully to the bottom of the groove. Tighten the nut by rotating it clockwise. You can use some force, don't worry, compass doesn't break easily :) PROTIP: If the lead tip doesn't stay in place firmly, scrape off any excess paint from the groove. If the groove is clean, the lead tip should stay in place properly. Remember that you can always contact us if you encountered a problem with our compass. However, the removable steel nib (upon which the compass pivots) slides in no matter how hard you tighten it. I finally got around the problem by wrapping a bit of electrical tape around the nib before reinstalling it, and that solved the issue, but it seems a shame I had to DIY my way around this silly design issue. All metal design, replacement 2mm leads, replacement metal tips are all convenient to have to add to the life span of this thing which I’d imagine would last years. Currently using it for calculus class for drawing circles or graphs. My favorite part is the metal wheel you can easily rotate to adjust the size. No issue with size changing unintentionally. (not sure if that’s an issue but when you set it, it doesn’t move) Also have yet to break the lad since I’ve bought it.
