For many years the Betty Schrampfer Azar books have been my favorite grammar texts. They still are an impressive resource. But I recently discovered the Raymond Murphy texts. Unlike Azar, the lessons are neatly structured in short sequences that model a specific language feature, give examples, and follow with accessible, well-thought out exercises for practice. There are American and British English versions as well.
