You cannot see the amount of charcoal in the grill because it has a cloth like material over it which lights the charcoal. When that burnt off the charcoal was all in the middle and not much of it. I tried to spread it out to be able to use the whole surface but there just was not enough. Thank goodness I brought both of them so I could cook more. I was only able to cook 3 hamburgers on one grill and no hotdogs. For the price I paid I should have bought a regular portable grill I could reuse.
