The hinge side of the window doesn't need to be opened that far since the fabric is wide enough to handle putting out the duct and the window itself will seal the heat and bugs from entering. You could also use a strip of insulating foam or tape to seal it if that makes you more comfortable but is not necessary. **Q: Does this work on a common window that opens up and down? It was long at the top and bottom but we folded it at the top and taped the Window cover up and wrapped around the hose at the bottom. It went up easy with lots of tape left over. We tried it out and works fine. I only gave it 4 stars for now for quality and durability because it is too early to tell how it will hold up through the summer. However I think it should do fine. I do not get the sun beating on my windows. Rather then AC the whole house I use the AC unit in my bedroom and do not turn the main unit.I may have to put duck tape around the hose where it goes out the window to ensure hot air coming in. I had a piece of plastic in the window that did not fit all that well and used lots of tape to keep the thing in the window. This looks a lot neater and easy to clean. The width of the opening is 12 inches for the hose to stick out. This is one of the free standing portable A/C's .
