It can be installed to make/break contact in a fluid. I use it for water. When installed in one direction, it makes contact when full; when installed the other direction, it makes contact when empty. Thus, I have one switch at the top of a container collecting water to trigger when it is full; the other switch is at the bottom to trigger when it is empty. **Q: Will these work under water?** A: Yes, that is how they work. In this installation the circuit is closed until the water is high enough to open it. As the water rises the float goes up, opening the circuit.
