Our power has occasionally been pretty dirty. Over the last two years, Duke Power entered into a long-term powerline program to remove all tree growth. Power outages have diminished significantly.About six weeks ago, we got some of the strongest winds (horizontal rain with two episodes of gravel-sized hail) in recent memory. Eventually, the power went out. But it didn't 'just' go out. For about twenty minutes the power coming into the house was only enough to light the LED emergency lights on the walls. Even the LED lamp bulbs barely flickered. Off-setting that, occasionally, the lights would come fully on for about 60 seconds only to dip back into the severe "browning".As I said, that went on for about twenty minutes. I visualized a powerl ine on the ground somewhere causing that behavior. Eventually, I shut off all the breakers to the appliances. But for the twenty minutes, the Panamax held its ground. No damage to the refrigerator. Has I not had all my other electronics plugged into 'expensive' Cyberpower sine-wave APCs, I'm sure the damage would have been extensive.That storm was the worst (as far as brown-out) as we've ever seen. The Panamax seemed to manage things quite well and no expensive repairs to the electronics of the refrigerator. It's a tad expensive but I can't bring myself to trust any of the off-brand junk coming from China. I have used Panamax surge protectors in other areas of my house and been quite happy with them.I selected this one because it fits nicely behind the coffee machine (see photo), so it is normally completely out of sight.Of course if you really want to protect the electronics in your house, this should be just one of several layers of protection. I would suggest adding a whole-house surge protector, which an electrician can install at your circuit panel. Eaton makes some very affordable units which are sold at Amazon, Home Depot, etc. If you purchase one an electrician should be able to install it in less than two hours.
