So not as high performing as e.g. Cellotex or Kingspan, but less bulky, easier to work with, and a fraction of the cost. At least some insulation is better than no insulation. The space between the batons is completely filled, with no gaps, in order to reduce or avoid condensation. The 10mm polystyrene sheets cut OK with a knife, e.g. a Stanley with a new blade. Any knife should be OK but it needs to be insanely sharp and used at a shallow cut angle. Cut along the edge of a hand saw to get a straight edge.
