I have 70 orchids. Some require a special medium, or no medium at all. Most orchids, though, thrive in the loose bark chips.Remember, orchids HATE 'wet feet'. The medium needs to dry out before re-watering. Once a week is sufficient during non-blooming periods. Twice a week when the buds are about to open until the flowers die off, which can be quite a while if the orchid is happy. When you water, set them in the sink and pour water over them to thoroughly wet the bark. Remember to keep an open container of water (bowl) near your orchid to provide humidity. Orchids are tropical plants. They do best in 75%+ humidity.Water with de-ionized water if possible; tap water is a horrible mix of minerals and chemicals that can harm or kill your plant. **Q: Has anyone had insect issues with this bark?** A: I've used this bark for orchids (only bark, nothing else) and in my aroid potting soil mix, and there have been no issues with insects at all. **Q: Approximately how big are each piece of bark?** A: Approximately 1-2".
