You can remove the keyboard completely and it is relatively lightweight. I wish they had other colors and that the keyboard was backlit like their new version for the iPad 9.7 do. The automatic sleep/wake function when you close/open the cover does not work though. I think Apple changed either the placement or the polarity of the magnets to mess with competitor's covers.
