I’ve been training for the 50K distance for the past year and started experimenting with nutrition. I tried skratch chews, honey stinger waffles, honey stinger chews, health warrior chia bars, bolt chews, the list goes on. Some were okay, but I still found it hard to stomach any of those options after 15 miles. I ordered the variety plus pack of hüma gels to try them out and I LOVED them. GU gels had been great because they had good flavor and gave me energy without having to chew solid food. However, I always felt like I was choking it down because it was similar to the consistency of peanut butter - it would make my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth, it coated the inside of my mouth (nasty feeling), and I always had to follow it with a lot of water to feel like I could breathe again without my tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth. The Hüma gels are not like that at all. They have a great texture (as others have said, similar to applesauce) and are easy to eat while running! I’m pretty picky about flavors (I don’t like banana, mango, blueberry, etc.), but I actually liked all of the flavors and there were flavors like banana, mango, and blueberry. I was really surprised that I liked all of them, but it was a pleasant surprise. They aren’t too sweet so they don’t upset my stomach like some of the other nutrition options I listed. They’re easy to carry, easy to eat, and provide a good energy boost.
