This was my first time buying bone china and there is such a huge difference between these and the set of cheap stoneware I had before--they are more uniform in size, so much thinner and lighter and so far nothing has put a scratch on them. They also don't take up nearly as much room as my old dishes--the bowls in particular fit nicely into each other so I only need one stack in my cabinet where I used to have to have two. I really love the simple pattern around the edges and these will work well for casual dining as well as fancier dinners. I did end up requesting a replacement mug and two replacement bowls from Mikasa due to small defects and they were friendly and fast about shipping them to me.
