Even including Chaliapin, I cannot imagine a better Boris Godunov than Boris Cristoff, and I have listened to many versions over the years. Forget everything else, put this CD on and listen to the beauty of his voice and his dramatic ability. All other basses, particularly modern ones, sound coarse when compared to Cristoff, who appears to follow the philosophy of Isobel Baillie - never sing louder than lovely. Although the recording is not as sophisticated as modern recordings, I would still recommend this for anyone who wants a recording of Boris Godunov as with Boris Cristoff you get the 'soul' of the opera - and, as an extra bonus, you also haave Cristoff singing some of the minor bass roles. If you like the voice of Boris Cristoff, then I recommend you listen to the CD of Mussorgsky songs as performed by him - st times frightening, at times wistful, at times tender, but never less than beautiful..

Cela fait peut-être 50 ans que je n'avais pas réécouté cet enregistrement que je possédais en vinyle quand j'ai découvert l'opéra. Et bien, malgré l'année d'enregistrement (1952), ce coffret n'a rien perdu de sa vigueur. L'immense Boris Christoff est absolument fabuleux dans ces trois rôles. Même si cela peut déranger, notamment dans la rencontre Boris-Pimène, ses trois interprétations  sont très personnalisées. Il faut entendre la scène du carillon ou la mort du tsar. Mis à part Vedernikov dans l'enregistrement de Fedossieev, aucun chanteur ne peut rivaliser dans la véracité du personnage. Cela donne la chair de poule. Les autres chanteurs sont aussi excellents, notamment Gedda qui surpasse Piavko. Eugenia Zareska, sans faire oublier la grande Arkhipova, possède une voix très chaude. Le tout emmené avec une fougue par Issay Dobrowen et l'orchestre de l'ancienne ORTF. Magnifique enregistrement!
