Can't Use Printer without GY cartridge on MG6220

*by K***N on Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2018*

My printer will not work. I did a full refill, or that was my intent - and, as other people have said ink had leaked from some cartridges...but I was desperate to print a return slip for item I purchased from Amazon.I tried to use one of the slim Black cartridges in place of the missing GY as this set DOES NOT HAVE all the cartridge colors necessary for the CANON MG6220.I was hoping to save money but now have a mess. I used generic refills before and have even succeeded in using small black in place of GY but my printer will not allow it. Guess I have to go to office supply store and pay, but what if I get just one Canon cartridge and then it still won't work?Did this happen to anyone else here? How did you resolve? Thanks. Well...more bad news. I went to Best Buy and bought one GY cartridge that someone here mentioned (251) and it is wrong size for my MG6220 Pixma Canon printer. Another $13 wasted. Yes, I could scream.Final Edit: This vendor was courteous enough to respond to my problem with their explanation that most of the printer models they list in the product description do not require the grey cartridge. Be that as it may...they asked my permission to issue a $3 credit which I said yes to. That helps very much that the vendor actually cares about the problem, but I do maintain they should stipulate for owners of Canon printers that require grey that they need to purchase that separately from the cartridges they mail to you. Buying generic can and should save the consumer a great deal of money and should work well for most people.

    Not so good

*by B***H on Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2014*

I started clearing out some collections from my house and needed a new printer to print shipping labels. I decided that I was wasting a lot of ink printing shipping labels and that I should try to save a bit of money and buy some non-OEM ink for my printer. What a mistake...When I replaced the ink cartridges, went through the "head cleaning" process on my Canont MG5220, and tried printing, I came to the realization that 2 of the 5 cartridges I replaced were completely not working. I tried the DEEP head cleaning utility, and still nothing came out. So I replaced those 2 catridges (the magenta and the smaller black). The black now worked, but the magenta required 2 additional deep head cleaning cycles to get it working.Once working, I printed a shipping label and noticed that the print heads were now misaligned vertically. Okay, I understand, as anytime you do a "deep head cleaning" the heads have a good chance to get misaligned. So I proceeded to have my MG5220 perform it's automated print head alignment process. Once through, I printed the label again. Now it was misaligned in a different section. Another cycle through the alignment process and finally it seemed like all was aligned. It wasn't until I compared a printing label printed with the new ink versus the old ink that I realized why the automated process was having issues - the new non-OEM ink simply wasn't able to produce the same fine print quality as the actual OEM ink! I compared several shipping label examples and could see all the lines and letters were thicker with the new ink. I started to worry that, since I was using this to print shipping labels that the barcodes wouldn't be scan-able by the USPS, since even a small amount of thickness difference would change the barcode. So I went back and printed the old labels under the "fine" setting on the printer. It turns out the "fine" quality with this non-OEM ink looks to produce about the same quality prints as the "normal" setting with the old OEM ink.So if you're looking to save a buck and don't care about wasting a cartridge or two, and don't care about print quality, this package might be good for you, especially if you don't mind taking much more time to print everything on "fine" quality. For me, I'd rather pay the extra money and get a reliable, fast, quality product every time. No more non-OEM ink for me.

    Got what I paid

*by N***S on Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2013*

I'm a true believer that you get what you pay for but with that in mind I ordered this ink as an alternative to the more expensive Cannon ink. My first concern was at the price listed would this ink even work and after reading some of the mixed reviews I decided to take a chance. The ink arrived ahead of schedule and thanks to some of the previously posted reviews I had a pretty good idea what to expect. My ink arrived in great condition and individually wrapped in air tight plastic bags. Some of the previous reviews remarked that the Ink leaked after removing the locking device. So with that in mind I removed the ink from the packaging then locking device over a few paper towels and removed the plastic tab on top. Doing this was a great idea because the ink did drip a few drops so after a few shakes to insure no more drips would occur I inserted into my printer Cannon MG5320 and everything worked as advertised. So now I have inexpensive replacement ink that actually works with LED lights.I can say at this point I have no complaints with the product but I am curious as to why the ink drips after removing the locking device. Could it be due to shipping or the process in which the ink is filled? In the end I guess it really doesn't matter because with some preparation beforehand there will be no unexpected messes. I rated this as a 4 because of the initial drip when removing the locking device.
