I use a 14-point evaluation:SIGNAL: pencil, note paper, whistle (a rescue dog should be able to hear it a mile away, but humans may miss it at 100 yards)NAVIGATION: button compassSHELTER: noneFIRE: tinder, metal match, tea candleWATER: noneMEDICAL: noneFOOD: noneTOOLS: fishing tackle (hooks, sinker, line, leaders), snare wire, sewing kit (needle and needle threader, threads, buttons, safety pins), wire "commando" saw and pocket knife. PUN WARNING: they cut corners with this knife--it isn't  Victorinox Signature Lite Swiss Army Knife  -- note that this Swiss Army Knife costs more than the entire Proforce Equipment 31150 Combat Survival Tin but has a pen and a tiny flashlight. I replaced the pocket knife in this kit--see below for more comments.INFORMATION: a basic survival information sheetPORTABILITY: 6.4 ounces and the kit is bigger than the  Coghlan's Survival Kit-In-A-Can , but still pocket-sizedPRICE TAG: mine cost me $25, but prices will varyMAINTENACE: kit can be opened and resealed--electrical tape outside, and a gasket in the lid keep the kit contents dry--however, candle and tinder will melt in extreme heat (I recommend using a zip-lock bag inside to hold the candle and tinder)LEGAL ISSUES: anyplace banning knives or fire will ban this kit--do not take aboard carry-on luggage when flying, checked baggage only!KIT CASE: small metal can with lid--inventory printed on lidKits of these types were intended for trained air crews and special operations forces personnel as an escape and evasion kit beginning in World War Two. Special forces people would disassemble their kit and hide the components in their uniform and on their bodies. Air crew kept their kit in a designated pocket so if they lost everything, they'd still have a few things.I call this a starter kit. I took mine apart, evaluated it according to my experiences, skills and knowledge, and reassembled it with things I needed. Water purification? Bring your own. A pack of  Emergency Mylar Blankets - 84" x 52" (4 Pack)  and some  Parachute Cord Nylon 7 Strand 550lb Tested U.S MADE 100'  and perhaps a tiny LED flashlight? As it stands, this kit won't work for the average person who has no outdoor experience. Even with the add-ons, playing with this kit so that you can build a fire (at least under ideal conditions) is a start. About the saw--it is fragile and if you kink it, you will wind up with two pieces of a saw. Use a bowed stick to make it into a bow saw--holds the saw straight and prevents kinking, helps make sawing easier, safer, more efficient and less frustrating. Just don't overload the kit--it's easy to put more stuff in it than the case will hold. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's a great little supplementary tool for your "Oh s***" essentials *by E***K on Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2016* To be honest, I have been lucky not have used this tin yet, and I hope I never have to. The two items that I added to the tin one Crayola crayon, one small single AAA Stream light flash light and a red first aid survival bandanna. I keep the tin in my hiking camel back which I keep in my truck. It's a great little supplementary tool for your "Oh s***" essentials. I would definitely recommend this (or something identical) to any/ all Boy Scouts and hikers.
