The pieces snap back on to make them full length, but the shape of the handle makes it quite inconvenient to use, and even if you just use the utensil without the handle, they're just barely too small to be comfortable (and I have small hands). If you are stirring something and dip the handle part into your food, it's very difficult to clean the gunk out of the small plastic channels. After a few years, most of the utensils are already starting to rust.
