My preferred method are the rubber string type plugs. You remove the screw or nail and insert a reamer into the hole. You ream it out good to roughen the surface and then insert a tool holding the string into the tire. They work surprisingly good... and are in most cases permanent. In twenty years I think I've had maybe two that leaked.The weakness in these string type plugs is they are often hard to insert. If the nail or screw you're trying to repair is very small then I've actually had to resort to a drill to make the hole large enough to repair. Also by having to ream it out... if your repair is on the back tire... you may have to remove the wheel to repair property.These solve those problems... but I really feel like these are not a permanent repair. Basically, you remove the screw and using a Phillips screwdriver; screw this into the hole. It works great. My only concern is the metal screw part somehow getting loose or falling out as the tire wears. For sure though, it's a very easy emergency repair.
