I have recently installed this medium cage derailleur on my 20 year-old mountain bike along with this 10 speed cassette with an SL-M780-R 10 speed shifter and a CN-HGX95 chain. This shifter and medium cage derailleur is able to shift to all 10 cogs of that 11-42 tooth cassette. It shifts like butter. **Q: those the long cage SGS will handle 11-46 casette??** A: SGS is a 36 max with a 22 tooth total difference on chainrings, GS is 42 max with no more than a 10 tooth total difference chainrings. Chainrings are the gears on the front. Derailleur is for use with a shimano 10spd shifter. **Q: The description says "direct mount compatible".
