“Rani” – a miniseries in eight parts – is a Belgian-French historical drama (a fantasy, an adventure) set in France and India in the middle of the 18th century. Here is some basic information about this drama which was shown on French television (France 2) from December 2011 to January 2012:** Director: Arnaud Sélignac** Producer: Alain Clert** Writers: Huguette Marien & Jean Van Hamme** Music: Fabrice Aboulker** Released on DVD in 2013** Soundtrack: option # 1 French (original); option # 2 German (dubbed)** Studio: Studio Hamburg enterprises** Number of discs: 3** Number of episodes: 8** Run time: 8 x ca 50 minutes = ca 400 minutesThe cast includes the following:** Mylène Jampanoï as Jolanne de Valcourt** Jean-Hugues Anglade as Philippe de Valcourt – Jolanne’s half-brother** Rémi Bichet as Craig Walker – a half-Irish soldier in the English Army** Pascal Demolon as Laroche – a French police officer** Jean-Philippe Ecoffey as Joseph-François Dupleix – the French governor of Pondicherry** Yaël Abecassis as Jeanne Dupleix – the French governor’s wife** Emma Reynaud as Laure de Marsac – Jolanne’s childhood friend - later married to Philippe de Valcourt** Olivier Sitruk as Ranveer Singh – the Rajah of Sandrapur** Antoine Gouy as Charles de Bussy – an officer in the French Army** Doudou Masta as Gabriel – a French Robin Hood** Jeffrey Goldberg as Robert Clive – an officer in the English Army** Nukund Murthy as the Prime Minister of Sandrapur** Nina Kulkarni as the Queen Mother of Sandrapur** Haarsch Nagar as Chandi – a fisherman in an Indian village** Lio as Madam Rose** Gabrielle Wright as Indra** Hande Kodja as Françoise** Eric Viellard as Bertrand de la Bourdonnais – an officer in the French ArmyIn a few scenes English is spoken; in a few scenes Hindi is spoken; these scenes are covered with “hard” subtitles in German. As stated above, this is a historical drama, i.e. a fictional story that is placed in a historical context. In this case the context is France and India in the middle of the 18th century. It is also a fantasy, an adventure. This means that not everything is realistic. You must suspend your demand for total realism in order to enjoy this drama.I do not wish to spoil the viewing for anyone. Therefore I am not going to reveal too much about what happens in this drama. I will only tell you how the story begins:The story begins in Périgord (in the south of France) in 1743. Jolanne de Valcourt is betrayed by her half-brother Philippe de Valcourt who sells a secret military plan to the enemy (England) and frames his half-sister for the crime.Jolanne is condemned to death, but before the sentence can be implemented, she manages to escape. Later, when she is captured again, she manages to switch identity with another prisoner. And therefore her sentence is now deportation to India. This is how the story begins and this is where my presentation ends. If you want to know what happens to Jolanne and the people around her, you will have to watch the drama all the way to the end. Most of the drama is set in the south of India during the so-called Carnatic wars in which two European powers (England and France) fought each other while trying to get control over India. In the 18th century, France had two major trade stations in the south of India: (1) Mahé on the southwest coast and (2) Pondicherry on the southeast coast. Both places were under French control until 1954.The Carnatic wars were fought in three stages:** The first war = 1744-1748** The second war = 1749-1754** The third war = 1756-1763Most characters in this drama - including Jolanne de Valcourt, her half-brother Philippe and Craig Walker - are fictional, but there are a few exceptions. The following characters are real historical persons:** The French officer Bertrand de la Bourdonnais (1699-1753)** The French governor of Pondicherry Joseph-François Dupleix (1697-1763)** The French officer Charles de Bussy (1718-1785)** The British officer Robert Clive (1725-1774)As stated above, the drama begins in 1743. It ends around twenty years later, in 1763, but none of the permanent characters seems to have aged in any way when we get to the end. What do reviewers say about it? On IMDb it has a rating of 66 per cent, which corresponds to 3.3 stars on Amazon. On Amazon Germany there are 22 reviews of this product. The average rating is 4.3 stars. On Amazon France there are 20 reviews of this product. The average rating is 4.4 stars. As you can see, the Amazon ratings are quite good, quite high. But if you ask me, they are not high enough. Why? The script is well-written (if you can accept that this historical drama is a fantasy, an adventure), and most actors play their roles very well (although the bad guys are sometimes a bit too bad). The story is captivating, dramatic and often highly emotional. While fictional, the story is set in a historical context which seems to be quite realistic.“Rani” is a story about love and hate, about trust and betrayal, about discrimination between upper classes and lower classes, about politics and religion, about human rights. It is also about the conflict between two global powers of the first world and what would later become the Third World (India). Finally, it is about the conflict between two super powers (England and France) who want to rule the whole world or at least as much of it as they can take. The character Jolanne de Valcourt has a father who is a French nobleman, while her mother was a servant from Asia. Her father decided to acknowledge her, even though he was not married to her mother. Jolanne’s half-brother Philippe resents her because of this decision. He wants to be the only heir to his father’s estate.Mylène Jampanoï, who plays the character Jolanne, is a French actress who has a Chinese father and a French mother. She has the half-Asian look she is supposed to have. The actress, who was born in 1980, was 31 in 2011 when the drama was being filmed. The character Craig Walker is a half-Irish soldier who has joined the English Army. Rémi Bichet, who plays this role, is not Irish at all. He is a French actor. Choosing a French actor to play a half-Irish character was an unfortunate decision. I think the director should have found an Irish actor for this role, but I will regard this as a minor flaw. The cinematography is excellent. There are some wonderful images of the landscape in France and in India. The historical costumes are very convincing. And the musical score supports the story very well. I want to go all the way to the top with this drama. I think it deserves a rating of five stars.PS # 1. There should have been (optional) subtitles on the DVD: French, German, and English, in order to make the product accessible to an international market. It is a shame the studio could not see the value of spending a small amount of money to add this feature. Since there are no English subtitles, you must be able to understand French (the original version) or German (the dubbed version) in order to enjoy this drama.PS # 2. “Rani” is a Hindu / Sanskrit word which means “queen” or “princess.” Maharani is the wife of a rajah (maharajah).
