M5Stack really packed a ridiculous amount of hardware into something the size of a thumb drive. It’s easily the most versatile ESP32 board for rapid prototyping or building "pocket" tools like a Wi-Fi scanner, remote sensor, or mini-dashboard. The Upgrades (What’s Better) • Battery Life: They bumped the internal battery from 120mAh to 200mAh. In the world of tiny ESP32 boards, that’s a massive 66% increase. It actually stays alive long enough now to be useful away from a USB cable. • Storage & Speed: Moving to the ESP32-PICO-V3-02 with 8MB of Flash and 2MB of PSRAM is the real game-changer. You can finally run more complex UI scripts or firmwares (like Bruce or Nemo) without hitting memory walls immediately. • Screen & Buzzer: The 1.14-inch screen is surprisingly crisp for its size, and the onboard buzzer is actually audible now, which is great for alarm/notification projects. Why 4 Stars Instead of 5? The main reason I’m docking a star is the removal of the AXP192 Power Management Chip. In the older models, power management was handled by a dedicated chip. In the PLUS2, they’ve switched to a different logic where you have to hold a specific GPIO (G4) high in your code to keep the device powered on. • The Catch: If you are porting over old code from the original StickC Plus, it won’t work out of the box. You’ll have to update your libraries and add the M5.begin() or power-hold logic, otherwise, the device will just shut down the second you let go of the power button. • No Motion Wake: Some users (including me) noticed that they removed the interrupt line between the IMU (MPU6886) and the ESP32, which makes "wake-on-shake" features much harder to implement than on previous versions. Pros: • Insane I/O: Infrared, RTC, Microphone, LED, IMU, and 3 buttons—all in one tiny case. • Firmware Support: Huge community support; works great with Arduino, MicroPython, and UIFlow. • Compatibility: Still fits all the existing "Hat" and "Unit" accessories. Cons: • Power Logic: Requires code changes compared to the V1; can be confusing for beginners. • Fingerprint Magnet: The glossy screen and orange plastic show every smudge. Final Verdict: This is currently the best "mini" board in the M5Stack lineup. The extra RAM and battery make it much more capable for serious IoT development. Just be prepared to spend ten minutes updating your libraries to handle the new power-on sequence.
