I want to use in my kitchen but have a slight step on one side (about 8cm).** A: If you want to be a bit smart about it, you could deliberately mismatch the height of the shelf brackets on each side (which would normally make the shelf a slope), but keep the shelves level, so that the poles actually sit higher on one side to match your step. I bought two sets to store my fabrics on. They were dead easy to put together even for me on my own and I'm not that strong anymore.
