This guy does it all -- he writes, sings, plays music, arranges, produces, remixes, and...

*by A***C on Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2014*

...he even scripts his own videos. There have been only a few times in my life when my first 'listen'/exposure to a recording artist's 'sound' has involved a kind of 'time standing still', when I am suddenly aware of hearing something(/someone's artistry) that is profound, original, unique, and compelling. My first few seconds, and minutes, of hearing John Newman's "Losing Sleep", involved just such a response, as I abruptly stopped what I was doing, and 'locked in' -- I was 'struck', riveted, and utterly mesmerized by this new form of 'magic'... his voice, his music, his 'style', his 'sound'... a wondrous amalgamation -- and 'reformulation' -- of so many distinct, and yet many ineffable, aspects of soul, pop, and Motown, along with 'whispers' of other genres (and sometimes ever-so-faint 'hints' of specific artists) factoring in, along the way.In the liner notes of this album, John Newman conveys, "The reason I wanted to make an album called 'Tribute' is to acknowledge and thank all the people who have helped and inspired me throughout my life." -- and above those notes is a marvelous kind of 'family tree' -type 'chart', with a multitude of artists and groups whose influence John Newman acknowledges, and the lines of which (in the chart, and connecting the various artists along 'branches', and arranged in chronological order, by decade) all ultimately converge on his name. It's a terrific way to formally highlight -- and give a 'tip of the hat to' -- those whose music has inspired him, and played a role in forming the unique 'convergence' that is... John Newman's tastes, music, and 'sound'.Among the various artists found in this 'family tree', are Ray Charles, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons, Aaron Neville, The Jacksons, Martha Reeves, Marvin Gaye, Junior Walker & The All Stars, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Commodores, Bill Withers, Fleetwood Mac, KC & The Sunshine Band, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Joy Division, The Cure, Fine Young Cannibals, The O'Jays, Prince, Chaka Khan, Run DMC, New Order, Radiohead, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Nas, Amy Winehouse, John Mayer, Kings of Leon, Outkast, The Strokes, Adele, Cee Lo Green, Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire, and Ella Eyre (who also sings backing vocals on this album). In ways, when I hear John Newman sing, it's as though I'm hearing 'the love child' of this wondrous mix, and can, in various moments, seemingly hear subsets thereof -- with one of my favorite 'forms' being the Amy Winehouse/Michael Jackson/Adele/Otis Redding/Aaron Neville/Ray Charles/Joy Division/AllOfMotown 'love child' 'present in the mix'... :)That being said, John Newman has his own sound -- it's unique, and phenomenal. He's got a voice that stands out (and is outright sensual, in ways), and conveys emotion that is practically visceral, at times. Some of the moments that 'catch' and 'move' me the most, in hearing these songs, are the moments when the special 'grit' element in his voice, or the 'sweep' of how he delivers a lyric, or any of various ad-lib -like aspects most often heard only in live performances, is combined with emotion in 'just the right way', and it's transcendent.Additionally, the music -- wow -- one can go from hearing the soul-stirring sound of strings (I *love* the ways in which he has worked in violins, and an orchestra (and he was involved in the arrangements for the strings)), to a guitar, to a piano, to drums, to everything or subsets then 'joining together', and a horn section coming into play... and it's masterfully done.It seems impossible for me to simply 'listen' to his music, his voice, and his 'sound' -- I find myself 'feeling' it, and cannot help but 'move' 'to' and 'with' it...The London Metropolitan Orchestra performs on this album, and there is a video online which has some 'behind the scenes' moments from the recording sessions associated with them -- and there is one series of moments, in particular, that I recall, and found rather touching... and involves John Newman hearing it all come together, and hearing the incredible sound of the orchestra, and knowing that this is for his album, and his being humbled and emotionally moved by it. This has been a dream of his, and it's all really happening... :)There's also a choir singing in some of the songs. And his use of background vocals, and the vocal arrangements, altogether, are 'spot on'.For so many of these songs, I cannot help my apparent compulsion to harmonize along (and often, 'in my own way'), and dance as though my body were an 'instrument' -- being 'played' by the music, the song, and the 'sound'...While John Newman's talent is undeniable, it is its remarkable, all-encompassing scope that truly 'makes my head spin' -- he was involved in writing every song on this debut, as well as playing music (keyboards/synth/organ, guitar, tubular bells, & mellotron), arranging, producing, and singing. This is not only an exceptional album, but a downright stunning debut, and this collection of songs makes this one of those rare gems that one can listen to from start to finish, and not only enjoy every song, but want to start listening to them all over again...I look forward (what an understatement) to seeing what else this remarkable artist has in store for us, as he continues to develop his multi-faceted talent (he's only 23!), and writes new songs, new music, and creates new art for the world to enjoy.Just as various now-iconic musical artists had ultimately historic careers, singular/inimitable 'sounds', and music that was 'timeless', it feels as though John Newman is poised to 'join their ranks', and that this debut marks the beginning of a career that will be appreciated, lauded, and celebrated for years to come. What an artist! What an album... in a word: phenomenal.

This is one of the best CDs I have ever purchased. This young man has a huge and long future in the music world. The soul he puts into his music is way beyond his years. If you like blues, pop, or just music that moves you, this is the CD to buy. Every track on this CD is amazing. I'm eagerly awaiting to see what he has coming in the future.
