SSD Brought my Mother-In-Laws Laptop back from the brink of Death

*by I***T on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 22, 2018*

I got this SSD Hard Drive to replace my mother-in-Laws old and most likely dying Hard Drive in her Dell Inspiron N5010 Laptop which had gotten to the point it would take 3 to 4 minutes to boot and you were lucky if an application would open after a minute (The original HD was a Western Digital 5400rpm 320GB GB SATA Scorpio HD) still running the original Windows 7 OS that it had come with along with 4GB of RAM. Even with doing all the necessary machine maintenance it still ran like a person on life support. Needless to say this was now beyond except-able and something needed to be done because the Laptop had gotten to the point it literally could not be used. When I use Mushkin SSD Drives in the past I usually use their Reactor Series but while doing the research on Amazon and found this for about $10 less and decided to give it a try, and like the Reactor series I was not disappointed. Not only did it improve the performance of the Windows 7 OS by literally 100% I was also able to upgrade the Laptop to Windows 10 and got the exact same performance using this drive. I purposely held off on upgrading to Windows 10 before on this Laptop due to the previous performance issues with the original hard drive but the new SSD made that possible as well.PROS:- Overall Performance Improvement- Booting from BIOS to OS maybe 5 to 7 seconds- Application Response times are instantaneous- Able to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10, No performance degradation.CONS:- Absolutely NONE!Recommended Additional Software/Tools to perform the Hard Drive upgrade with if planning on Cloning your old hard Drive to your new one:- (Needed, unless your reloading the OS from Scratch) Use Macrium Reflect 7 Free Edition (Just do a Google Search to find) to clone your Old hard drive to the New One. It's an easy download that will install into your existing hard drive to make an exact clone to your New One. Best part the Free Edition does not cost a dime.- (Needed, unless your cloning a Desktop then Optional) Use this USB to SATA Drive connection cable

Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD / 2.5-Inch SATA Hard Drive Adapter [Optimized For SSD, Support UASP SATA III] (EC-SSHD)

for only $10 to clone the new drive with. Of course if it is for a Desktop this will not be needed but for 95% of the Laptops out there it's a must!- (Optional, if you already have a similar tool set) If your changing the hard drive out of these newer Laptops (within the Last 4 years) I would buy this tool kit

Soucolor 78 in 1 Precision Screwdriver Set, Magnetic Driver Kit, Repair Tool Kits with Portable Case for iPad, iPhone, Tablets, Laptops, PC, Smartphones, Watches, Electronics Disassembly

to access the Hard Drive, especially for those needing a plastic pry tool, can't go wrong for $20.- Only other recommendation I would make before beginning the upgrade is to make sure the BIOS on your laptop/PC is current so there are no compatibility issues with the SSD hard drive.PLEASE NOTE: Cloning the original Hard drive unfortunately was not an option for me on this particular occasion due to the original drives very slow performance it would cause the Laptop to bottleneck while in the middle of the cloning process which caused the task to fail. So I ended up installing the new SSD Blank (The Soucolor tool set came in handy for this evolution, especially the plastic pry tools to access the old hard drive) and building it from the original Windows 7 DVD. Once I insured everything worked under Windows 7 I then upgraded the Laptop to Windows 10.Overall: I could not be happier, Not only did this drive bring back my mother-in-laws laptop from the brink of death but allow me to successfully upgrade it to Windows 10. I would Highly recommend the SSD Hard Drive not only if your original hard drive is the condition my mother-in-laws hard drive was in but in general for overall performance improvement.DELL Inspiron N5010 (June 2011)OS: Windows 10 Pro (previously Windows 7 Pro)Processor: Intel I3 Core @ 2.53 GHz (3rd Generation, 4 Cores)RAM: 8 GB (Max Capacity, Previously 4GB)Hard Drive: 500GB Mushkin Source SSD (Replaced original Western Digital Scorpio 320GB 5400RPM SATA Drive)Video:Intel HD Integrated graphics card (HDMI & VGA)Display: 1360 X 768p 15.6 inch ScreenInternal NIC: 100MBWiFi NIC: Internal Intel Centrino WIFI 2.4GHZUSB Ports: 3 X USB 2.0 PortsROM: DVD/CD Burner

Great for boot drives/ bringing new life to older pc / upgrade older ssd's / budget builds

*by N***A on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 24, 2018*

I bought this right before RAM companies started to be investigated, so I did pay a tad bit more($109.99.) However, at the time this was one of the cheapest 500GB SSD's available. I read an article on arstechnica talking about these new drives, and thought to myself its perfect for upgrading a old OCZ Agility 3 120GB that I bought almost 7 years ago. My main usage is for Windows. Having a 120GB for windows/office/visual studio and default C installing programs and a few downloads that I forgot to point to a different drive was really starting to fill up. I took a chance on Mushkin, as the last piece of hardware owned by them was a VERY inexpensive digital Camera(which still works...besides the screen. Which is why I took the chance.)Super happy about the product. Avg speeds for a SSD, however, I don't think anyone really needs to have a blazing fast start up time. (my post screens still take more time than this drive, due to PCI sata adapters and what not showing on post.) As far as once being in windows and loading a Visual Studio solution,(or even Sublime Text with a 3 project folders, with 20+ web pages each.) I would say its a tad slower than my school HP Zbook g4 with m.2(obviously) But it is hardly noticeable. I also knew this type of drive was not built around blazing fast speeds, which is why it was cheaper than others.I will say compared to the OCZ I had, installing Windows Pro with all the updates was quite an upgrade for speed. I highly recommend for budget builds, or for giving new life to an older PC (As in a family member who just does basic computing, but looking to get a bit of speed on start up and apps that are running with a HDD.) Or if your looking to upgrade an old boot drive like myself.I know there was talks about a 1TB edition possibly coming out, not sure if that is still the case. Will defiantly keep an eye out for that if it ever happens.

Great SSD Value from a Company that Provides Great Support

*by L***T on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 5, 2018*

If you're looking for a technical comparison that shows how this SSD performs next to other SSDs, you're going to want to look elsewhere. In general, I recommend any SSD over a conventional hard drive, because SSDs offer superior performance and reliability over conventional hard drives. Most users going from a conventional hard drive to an SSD are going to see a huge performance improvement, no matter what SSD is installed. (Going from a slower SSD to a faster SSD will provide an improvement, but a much less noticeable one.)The main thing I like about Mushkin SSDs is the way the company stands behind them. SSDs are very reliable in general. I've done about 20 SSD upgrades as of the date on this review, and I've only had two SSDs fail. When a competing company's SSD failed, I had to go to that company's web site to apply for an RMA online, and it took a couple of e-mail exchanges before I finally had what I needed to send the failed drive back. Then, it took about 4 weeks for the company to send me a replacement. That's much too cumbersome and slow! When a Mushkin SSD failed, I quickly found a support phone number on Mushkin's web site. When I called that number, a friendly, knowledgeable support rep helped me through some troubleshooting, and, after confirming that the SSD was dead, he sent a replacement right out to me, and asked me to return the failed one at my convenience. If I'd been in a rush and been willing to pay the cost of overnight shipping, I'm sure he would have sent one overnight. THAT is appropriate support for a storage product.
