It captured the wiful and changeable aspects of her personality, hardly surprising as she had had to survive a childhood and younger life where her experiences swung from one extreme to another and she was never in control of anything. I've seen other retellings of Elizabeth's life, including Elizabeth R and the movies Elizabeth and The Golden Age, and this feels more believble than any. The complexity of her relationship with Dudley was totally believable and understandable. The locations, costumes, and music all contribute to making this a haunting and memorable film, one that stays with you for sometime afterwards. As a longtime fan of the Mediaeval Baebes, I enjoyed the soundtrack very much. Review: Brilliant historical drama - Somehow I missed this when it first aired, but I'm pleased to have seen it now. What a powerful and brilliant dramatisation of the reign of the Elizabeth I. It seems fitting that the daughter of Henry VIII and the tragic Anne Boleyn became arguably the strongest, most powerful monarch in history. There is a strong and able cast. Anne Marie Duff excels in the leading role, and Tom Hardy makes a gorgeous, dynamic Robert Dudley. Thanks to some helpful reviews, I managed to get the 2006 version and so have the full four episodes, whereas I believe the newer edition has been edited. I enjoyed every minute. There are negative comments on here about the make up, but this was made over 10 years ago and so it's important to bear that in mind. The costumes and settings are superb.
