Review: A very well thought out volume with excellent woodcut style illustrations for every story by anthologist Richard Wells. Many of the tales selected were new to me. Of course some of the best of the collection such as 'The Withered Arm' by Thomas Hardy and 'All Hallows' by Walter de la Mare are well known. Nevertheless i'd never heard of 'Pallinghurst Barrow' by Grant Allen, 'The First Sheaf' by H .R. Wakefield, or 'The Lady On The Grey' by John Collier, which are all of a high standard. A very attractive anthology which i strongly recommend.
Review: firstly, this is NOT an anthology of "folk horror" (whatever you take that to mean); instead this is a rehash of the usual out of copyright 19th century ghost stories available in 90% of other anthologies, and which i'm sure you've already read dozens of times (do you really need M R James' "The Ash Tree", Edith Nesbit's "Man-size in Marble", or R L Stevenson's "Thrawn Janet" AGAIN??! The illustrations are very childish too. All in all, seeing as I got this on offer for 5 euro I will keep it, but it's not worth any more than that frankly. (Consider that the standard price of the Wordsworth editions of supernatural stories are less than a fiver - I bought another copy of the E F Benson's horror stories to replace my lost old one - under a fiver for going on 700 pages.)
