## Description

Product description The Nexys A7 (previously known as the Nexys 4 DDR) is an incredibly accessible, yet powerful, FPGA development board. Designed around the Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA family, the Nexys A7 is a ready-to-use digital circuit development platform that brings industry applications into the classroom environment. Students can start learning right away with the Nexys A7 thanks to its versatile selection of interfaces, such as 10/100 Ethernet, USB, UART, JTAG, and VGA. With a built-in temperature sensor, microphone, and accelerometer, students can work on a variety of projects without needing any additional hardware. Of course, 5 Pmod ports are available for additional customizability and applications. Guides and demos are available to help you get started quickly with the Nexys A7, which can be accessed through Digilent's website. Nexys A7 Features System Features Internal clock speeds exceeding 450MHz On-chip analog-to-digital converter (XADC) Programmable over JTAG and Flash USB-JTAG programming circuitry Powered from USB or any 4.5V - 5.5V, 1A source microSD card connector System Connectivity 10/100 Mbps Ethernet USB-UART Bridge Interaction and Sensory Devices 3-axis accelerometer PDM microphone PWM audio output Temperature Sensor 2 four-digit seven-segment displays USB HID for mice, keyboards, and memory sticks 16 Switches 16 LEDs 2 tri-color LEDs 12-bit VGA output Expansion Connectors 4 Pmod connectors Pmod for XADC signals Power and Software Compatibility Powering the Nexys A7 The USB port can deliver enough power for the vast majority of designs. In order to power the board from USB port set jumper JP3 to “USB”. Our out-of-box demo draws ~400mA of current from the 5V input rail. A few demanding applications, including any that drive multiple peripheral boards, might require more power than the USB port can provide. In these instances, an external power supply can be used by plugging into to the power jack (J13) and setting jumper JP3 to “WALL”. The supply must use a coax, center-positive 2.1mm internal-diameter plug, and deliver 4.5VDC to 5.5VDC and at least 1A of current (i.e., at least 5W of power). Many suitable supplies can be purchased from Digilent, through Digi-Key, or other catalog vendors. Software Compatibility Nexys A7 can be programmed with Digilent's Adept software. Digilent Adept is a unique and powerful solution which allows you to communicate with Digilent system boards and a wide assortment of logic devices. To create and modify designs for your Nexys A7, you can use Xilinx's Vivado Design Suite. Both variants of the Nexys A7 are supported by the free WebPACK edition of the Vivado Design Suite.

Review: Exactly what it supposed to be - This board is exactly what it’s supposed to be… the Ethernet will have some limitations due to the type of phy they use, so selecting the right IP in Vivado is important if you’re using it with a MicroBlaze
Review: Neat little board - (I just started using the board. I will update the review if I find anything wrong with it.) I've been using a Genesys 2 board for a couple of months for a project, but I wanted to get something smaller and cheaper. The Genesys 2 is too large to carry around, and it also requires an external power supply. This board is much smaller, and it is powered off USB. The cost is important because I do not want to carry a $1k FPGA board around, and I also want to be able to share my design with others who cannot afford the more expensive board. I really like the simplicity of this board. The Gensys 2 is a very powerful and flexible board, but that power comes at a cost: it requires an external power supply, and it is not supported by the free version of Vivado. I will continue using the Genesys 2 as my primary (desktop) development board, but I am also really excited to have this neat little board. The one thing I wish was improved: the VGA port really should support 16b color. RGB565 is a very common color format. RGB444 is a bit ugly. WIth the heatsink installed, the demo project brings the temperature up to 43C (measured by XADC on the chip), so I would recommend installing a heatsink. The attached picture shows this board next to the Genesys 2. Also, I think it's really amazing that I can order an FPGA board from Digilent off desertcart and have it arrive the next day.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is ece curriculum?**
A: ECE stands for Electrical and Computer Engineering, so this board can be used as part of a curriculum for schools/courses to teach Electrical and Computer Engineering students how to program circuit boards.

**Q: Hmmm, ?can a fgpa emulate popular microcontrollers or cpus? if so, are there standard libraries available from them?**
A: FPGAs can be made to emulate microcontrollers or CPUs, such as the Cortex-M core resources from DesignStart. However, Digilent does not have any resources dedicated for this type of development. -Digilent Tech Support

**Q: Do i need to purchase vivado design suite? if yes, what is the price?**
A: The Vivado software you can use to program the board is available on the Xilinx website and included in their free webpack download. https://www.xilinx.com/products/design-tools/vivado/vivado-webpack.html

**Q: Is there a recommended external power adaptor here on Amazon?**
A: Hello, and thank you for your question regarding the Nexys A7-100T!

If you want to power the Nexys A7-100T with external power (you can also power it through the USB connection to your computer) you would want a 5V external power supply capable of 1A of current and a coax, center-positive 2.1 mm internal diameter plug, as noted in it's Reference Manual here: https://reference.digilentinc.com/reference/programmable-logic/nexys-a7/reference-manual#power_supplies.

One such compatible power supply is available through Digilent here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071ZJ4THG/
