## Overview

Modern Particle Physics by Mark Thomson is a well-structured, advanced textbook designed for second or final year physics students. It offers a clear, accessible approach to the Standard Model and key relativistic particle calculations without requiring prior quantum field theory expertise. Highly rated and recommended for those seeking a comprehensive understanding beyond typical undergraduate coverage.

## Description

Unique in its coverage of all aspects of modern particle physics, this textbook provides a clear connection between the theory and recent experimental results, including the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN. It provides a comprehensive and self-contained description of the Standard Model of particle physics suitable for upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students studying experimental particle physics. Physical theory is introduced in a straightforward manner with full mathematical derivations throughout. Fully-worked examples enable students to link the mathematical theory to results from modern particle physics experiments. End-of-chapter exercises, graded by difficulty, provide students with a deeper understanding of the subject. Online resources available at www.cambridge.org/MPP feature password-protected fully-worked solutions to problems for instructors, numerical solutions and hints to the problems for students and PowerPoint slides and JPEGs of figures from the book.

Review: An excellent companion to texts on Quantum Mechanics and QFT - This is a reasonably advanced text and ideal for studying the topic at second or final year first degree in theoretical and experimental physics. It is well laid out and well presented. It is certainly a good introduction for anyone embarking on a career as a physicist. A good knowledge of Quantum mechanics is required as well as a reasonable knowledge of Quantum Field theory makes this text an excellent companion.
Review: Very good - This is a really good book and a worthy successor to Halzen and Martin, or even the first volume of Bjorken and Drell. The author shows that the key calculations in relativistic particle physics can be obtained from a relativistic generalisation of Fermi's golden rule and a knowledge of the equations of motion for relativistic particles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1. It is not a book on quantum field theory nevertheless the reader who is prepared for some hard work will come away with a working knowledge of the Standard model of particle physics. That should be enough for most people. It is interesting that a knowledge of quantum field theory is not needed to understand the key calculations perhaps quantum field theory is not as important as some people think or make out. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to get up to speed on the standard model and who felt a bit cheated by their undergraduate degree in physics which did not really cover the topic in any great detail.

## Features

- Based on the NL-0 last, which offers a zero heel drop, meaning a more natural footstrike and closer to the ground experience.
- Acteva midsole providing great protection, whilst assisting in the natural feel
- Seamless welded uppers, meaning reduced rubbing and extra lightness
- Strategically placed vibram outsole for maximum lightness and durability
- Anti-microbial treatment helps reduce odours using these with or without socks.

I am a Masters student in physics and this book covers everything that is taught in Masters level particle physics and does so in a very thorough and comprehensible way, deriving many things from first principles. I highly recommend it!!
