They've clearly been sanded and given a quick coat of whitewash. Being natural wood, they do come with some minor 'imperfections' or inclusions like knot holes that add to their rustic charm. There was a knot hole along the straight outside edge of the bottom of one of ours that isn't an issue for us but might be considered second-rate by other folk. So do bear that in mind.These are currently sat atop a chest of drawers in our daughter's bedroom keeping all of her knick-knacks like hairbrushes, face creams, etc. accessible and in order.
