I wouldn't pick it up by the lid with cutlery in it and I'm fairly sure it's not water-tight, but it snaps on and keeps unwelcome pests out. Very handy. **Q: Are the lid and tray made of rigid plastic? Some mice have nibbled through the handle of my cheese grater and the wood utensil draw itself.** A: The lid fits the tray very firmly. It doesn't pop off, but you will have to pull it off to remove it. We had the occasional field mouse that would get into our home and as the seasons change we would get tree roaches and that was the reason for buying this silverware tray with lid so I could protect the silverware and not have to wash them constantly before use. I am very satisfied with it and feel it was a great investment. **Q: Is it BPA and phthalate free?** A: BPA free poly propylene **Q: How many settings does it hold?** A: It can comfortably hold 8 settings. I have 12 settings, but there's always something in the sink or dishwasher. I will say the dinner spoon section is a little smaller than my dinner spoons so I do have to put them not really sideways but at an angle. The soup spoon section holds more than 8 well. The salad fork and dinner knife sections have no problem holding more than 8.
