I've never tried to wet a striker and then let it dry out to see if it works again. **Q: Does it expire? How long is the shelf life before it doesn't spark up?** A: If the strike pad is inside the container and the container remains sealed, the Match Kit will continue to function well into the next couple of decades. It's like the birthday candles that you can't blow out. It will smolder a little then when it hits that next batch of flammable material it bursts right back up. Because of this if you light one of these they just keep burning even if you submerge them or toss dirt over them. Just don't think they're out until they're out for several seconds. The striking pad will not work when wet so you have to be relatively careful. Fortunately they provide extras inside so you can use those if the exterior one gets wet. The ones inside are in a plastic bag and you MUST keep them in these bags if you're going to store them in the same container as the matches. The last thing you want is to drop your pack then have a match rub against a striking pad. The only con to these is because of the thickness of the matches it can't store that many. Because they are great in storms I would use these as a last resort since there are so few per container. Update 3/30/2014: I went backpacking yesterday and camped out overnight. The temperature was 21 when I woke and I worked to boil some water for breakfast using a Trangia alcohol stove and denatured alcohol as the fuel. There was no wind. I first tried a ferro rod and it failed. I tried several normal matches and they failed to light the alcohol. They wouldn't even stay lit for more than a couple of seconds even when help upside down. I was confused. I tried the lighter and it wouldn't even light up! The last resort were these matches. Thank goodness I always pack these. These went up right away and stayed lit! I held it to the alcohol and had to leave it almost touching for several seconds before it finally lit! I learned my lesson. Oh, I also learned that alcohol won't light when extremely cold so you should warm it and your stove inside your coat first. That's what overnight adventures are for before going for a week long trip. Buy these matches!
