I like David Lapham's tales far more than Garth Ennis. Lapham is quick to the punch and doesn't have a bunch of talking like Ennis' story lines... he's just more FUN. I'm looking for Ernest Hemingway, I'm looking for extreme violence, action, visceral experience and not a lot of character development. These are comics, not fine literature. Lapham reminds us that this series is all about FUN. Review: Macabre masterpiece in my opinion - Psychopath is probably my favorite volume of Crossed. I own all the volumes out so far, so that being said. My review is only relevant to fans of the series. So straight up, Psychopath is BY FAR the goriest volume of Crossed up to date (Feb 2014) and would be just all around the most graphic but Avatar seems to be really upping the nudity in the more current Volumes 6&7. The artwork may come across as gritty at first, but it fits well with the story (it's told from the perspective of a psychopath.) Which brings me too what makes this my favorite volume, the story. While all of the Crossed volumes are survivor stories, this one's original to me (and all of my friends that read it.) SPOLIERS: for once the Crossed do not feel like the main antagonists, rather it's the main character (Lorre.) In a world as horrific as the Crossed universe, Lapham strongly succeeded in making Lorre far more sadistic than the crossed. It perfectly conveys that humans are the real monsters. Which admittedly is an overused theme in infection stories, but the point comes off stronger than when the Governor hacked off Tyrese's head (TWD.) Lorre is a seriously twisted guy, and this is only emphasised more by reading his inner dialog as he justifies his actions as the right thing. As I have said before, Crossed is not for everyone, and I highly doubt this one will make you change your mind on the series. But Psychopath is definitely one of my favorite comics. And that is exactly what you should come to expect from Crossed. I love the way the book does not compromise at ALL. The writer and artist did exactly what they wanted and I love that. Garth did not write this incarnation of Crossed which is cool. He is my favorite but so nice to see someone else have a crack at the title and they did great. obviously the book is for adults only. and I really mean that, do not let anyone under 18 read this, the subject matter is terrifying and disturbing and the artwork is gruesome and extreme.
