Much easier to use cable ties as although their are holes for screws that method is painful unless you use a magnetic screwdriver!! **Q: Would decking screws be suitable for attaching the spikes to the top of a pergola and if so, what size screw would be best?** A: You don't need anything like a decking screw to fix these to timber etc. I used zinc plated self-tapping pozi pan head screws, size 6 x half inch, or 3.5mm x 13mm in metric. The fixing holes in the spikes are pre drilled for a number 6 or 3.5mm screw. They are quite short and needs at least 3 to cover a fence panel.
