It is retained by friction from an o-ring. This puller worked great to remove a Volvo 940 harmonic balancer (crank pulley). The jaw ends will fit through the pulley slots and the tool is short enough so you can operate it without having to remove the radiator fan and/or radiator. 1) Reinsert the crank bolt, without the washer, but only thread it in about halfway. 2) Take the jaw arms off the crosspiece and hook them into the crank pulley with hooks pointing to center.
