To collect food particles. It's a much better quality than the other cheap ones on the market. **Q: when you measure the lenght do you measure the basket it self [ mine is less then an inch] or the basket plus the stopper mines less than 1.25** A: Your measurements sound right to me. I didn't measure and am not home to check. I had Kohler stamped into my sink waste pipe. It is very good quality for a basket and remember Amazon has a great return policy.
