The book mostly focuses on writing habits. Those should be more instilled when they're just learning to write in my opinion. **Q: I am looking for something to improve penmanship. My 1st grader forms letters from the bottom. Has anyone used this series for that issue?**
A: Yes,  it shows starting points and strokes for all letters.  I have personally used this when my kiddos were little.

A: Not sure.  I purchased mine 5 years ago.

**Q: What is the difference in the one for first grade and second grade?**
A: bigger words; list derived from standard first and then standard second grade words.  Will help with spelling.

**Q: Does this have sentence writing as well?  Or are there only words?**
A: It contains both words and sentences.

"Handwriting Without Tears" is SO wonderful. This book categorizes the letters according to shape/form and easy methods that stick in your child's memory. Instead of teaching alphabetically, the lessons are arranged in motor-skill oriented sections with simple active pictoral instructions to help with visual recall. You can do lessons in order or move in different sections. My child had many tearful handwriting lessons before this totally magical workbook. I absolutely recommend this book!

I used this workbook for my first son when he was in first grade, and I am about to reorder for my second son. The book teaches great printing skills, with plenty of practice using the letters and numbers on their own as well as in words and sentences. Some self driven kids may be able to complete the pages alone, but I sat with my son while he did it, to make sure he was building correct handwriting habits.
