Review: Fantastic mid-range bidirectional scanner - This bidirectional scanner is freaking awesome! I'm not a mechanic, yet I am handy and perform most automotive repairs for myself as well as for my family andfriends. I own basic scanners and they serve their purpose but have limitations. After weeks of reviewing other scanners, I ended up with the K7. This scanner does the basics: reads codes, erases codes, I/M readiness (for smog tests) and shows/graphs live data. But then it does much more...reads all systems (ABS, SRS, Transmission, etc). Depending on the vehicle, it also performs actuator testing. This includes turning on and off evap solenoids, fans, a/c clutches, headlights, etc. In the short period I've owned it, it has assisted in testing evap solenoids, finding and fixing a faulty seatbelt and troubleshooting a cooling fan. All these issues on 3 different vehicles. It already paid for itself. Again, I am not a mechanic..but with a tool like this K7 and tons of data and videos available online, a do-it yourself type of person can diagnose and fix a bunch of things just by remotely activating systems for testing. The lifetime free updates is also a plus. I haven't used all it's functions yet and some are well over my skill-set. For a mid range price point, it has been incredible so far. It connects very quickly, scans the VIN and then the systems very fast compared to the others I have. First use was verifying a used car we were looking at - pulled up an evap code that would have made it fail inspection in our state - we bought the car after the seller had it repaired - saved us $900 in parts, and saved me 6 hours under a car! Now, these days I'm pretty much a higher-end 'backyard' guy, but I ran shops for over 20 years, so I can apreciate a good tool. Next up troubleshooting a van with no heat - I was able to easily get into live data and read the temp. sensors. Now a big one - a late-model BMW, I just plugged in to test the unit's control functions WOW! it revealed hidden codes for a few issues I have had the car back to the dealer for several times!!! - And they claim every time 'nothin is wrong' To the point I'm ready to Lemon-Law the thing! Now, I have proof there IS something wrong that they either didn't LOOK for, or just didn't want to deal with. (these are all software issues within the car's systems) This unit, while being very thorough, is fairly compact, makes it easy to take along with me to look at cars that I have to travel for (the last two were 6 and 8 hour one-way trips and a couple times a year I'll fly out) Very solid feel - and so far I'm more than satisfied with Kingbolen's customer service! - They have been very responsive and helpful with issues and questions.
