They adjust via slider cutouts and hardware to bolt them down. This can be seen in the product images. There should not be any cutting. The ends are important to these since the end clips are needed to attach them to the vertical adjustable bars inside server cabinet. If your cabinet interior is smaller than 19.5 (shouldn't be) or larger than these dimensions you may need to look for a different shelf. I have a larger cabinet but the vertical cabinet bars are adjusted to the depth of my servers and this shelf is adjusted to the same depth to attach properly. **Q: Will this fit my 2u height server?** A: This is a shelf and not rails for a for a rack server. The only question is whether it will hold the weight of what you want to put on it **Q: Could a 4U server without rail kit sit on top of this in an open rack?** A: Please do not take this as the official answer. It is pretty solid. And it is rated to 175 pounds. I have an old Mac Pro, 5 MacMinis, and a switch on mine. It isn't flexing at all. I have no concern about adding 5 more MacMinis. 175 pounds is a lot. Hopefully that helps. If you follow the instructions and install the 4 rails onto the shelf, then the shelf will not fit into a 19” rack because the screws stick out…. You have to half assemble it, then put it in the rack, then install the other rails.
