Review: Karl Richter and J S Bach, rarely in music I a conductors name almost synonymous with that of a composer yet for many years it was difficult to think of J S Bach without also thinking of Richter. Richter transformed how Bach's music was performed, some might call him a stepping stone between the romantic style of interpreting and performing Bach and the HIP movement but I do not agree with this. Richter stood outside both the romantic tradition and the HIP movement and to try and imagine him as some sort of missing link in the evolution of performing of Bach falls down since if he was removed from the romantic tradition he was if anything even more removed from the HIP movement. In these days when HIP is the norm for Bach and even modern ensembles generally perform in the HIP style these recordings feel very different, at once both old and new. Old in that they hail from an era before what is now normal was so, new in that there is a remarkable vitality and freshness which hasn't dated in decades since they were recorded and which challenges the modern orthodoxy (one of the ironies of the HIP movement is that what started as a challenge to prevailing orthodoxy is now little more than conservative dogma). Pacing is brisk and there is a sense of dynamism throughout. Despite being a scholar of Bach and gifted with remarkable insights into the music of the Bach family Richter never approached performance as an intellectual exercise but rather as emotion and conveying an idea in music, celebrating the music. The result is a set of recordings which are enthralling and utterly compelling, joyous and uplifting. The Munich Bach Orchestra perform well and deliver Richter's vision. Recording quality belies the age of the recordings, DG did a good job with their re-mastering and the technical quality is perfectly adequate and does not detract from the music in any way (I've heard worse from much newer recordings. Some of this set is on the golden record sent to the far reaches of space with the Voyager spacecraft, it heartens me that one day if humanity ends some distant civilization may at least know the greatness of JS Bach and the brilliance of Richter and his orchestra. Overall, wonderful in every way, be reminded of just what Richter gave us and of his brilliance with this bargain priced set.
