The sides are completely open. There is a cutout in the top for switches for the 9. It supports my Microsoft Surface Pro 9 perfect. The stand does not wobble at all when I am using it on my bed. I had to return a really nice looking and overall good quality cover because my laptop keeps falling down due to the edge wobbling and unable to keep my laptop up. This replacement does its job and now I'm happily typing away on my keyboard without putting up any more fights to keep my laptop from falling. The cover is also thin but protective so I like that as well.
